The Town of Bay Harbor Islands is committed to ensuring that residents receive high-quality drinking water that complies with all local, state, and federal regulations. The drinking water provided to the Town is routinely monitored by licensed professionals and does not contain lead. However, the Town cannot control the plumbing materials found on private properties.
Many older homes and buildings, especially those constructed before the mid-1950s, may still contain plumbing components made of lead. If service lines or internal plumbing pipe contain lead, there is a chance that lead can enter the water supply. Because of these risks, the use of lead in plumbing systems was banned in Florida in 1989.
To protect public health, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has strengthened the Lead and Copper Rule through recent improvements (LCRI), with the goal of identifying and eliminating remaining lead-containing pipes nationwide.
In support of these efforts, the Town of Bay Harbor Islands Public Works Department is undertaking a comprehensive inventory of water service lines. This includes both the portion maintained by the Town (from the water main to the meter) and the customer-owned segment (from the meter to the building). Completing this inventory will help identify any remaining lead sources and guide future replacement efforts. To request access to a copy of the current inventory, please contact the Town’s Public Works Department at 305-866-6241 ext. 130.
